A sister of 3 and mother of 4, Amela grew up in Paris with a strong connection to her family’s agricultural past. After a Masters degree in statistics, she worked for over 15 years for retail and consulting firms in Paris and abroad.  Now she has refocussed her energy towards building greener cities and shorter food circuits. She founded BienElevées with her sisters, growing saffron on rooftops.

Saffron is an extraordinary plant that thrives in urban farming conditions. Without water or energy consumption, its flower produces a powerful spice and its culture gathers people together. Urban saffron farms produce significant volumes of the spice to be sold locally. They create islands of freshness in the city and reconnect urban citizens with nature. In the longer term, BienElevées aims to be part of constructing a solid and sustainable French saffron industry, building bridges between urban and traditional agriculture.

MOTIVATION FOR AND COMMITMENT TO CREATING A BETTER AND MORE SUSTAINABLE PLANET

"I want to contribute to a lighter human footprint on our planet, leveraging the incredible resources of nature itself to create delightful, sustainable places and products.

I was fascinated by the virtues and strength of saffron. Seeking to have a positive impact of my living environment, I built BienElvées with my sisters based on how well saffron satisfies the constraints of urban agriculture."
